We're saved!!!! NICE GOING LECTURER RADZI!!!
Mr.Radzi mentioned regarding the theories. That kind of worries me because my essay was basically full of my own opinion supported by exampled...i do hope he accept it. The lecture was ...as....always.......sending me into the realm of thinking and guesswork...nice going with the workload we're having.
Mr.Radzi's explanation was jumbled up but its pretty interesting to figure what he was saying...(no offense given)

Topic 6- Media Effects Using McLuhan's "Tetrad of Media"

Using McLuhan's "Tetrad of Media" (see diagram below), choose a medium or media application or tool (e.g. newspaper, books, radio, tv, film, internet, computer games, handphone, instant messaging, blogging, online advertising, youtube, facebook etc.) and explain its media effects? Please refer to Week 9's lecture notes plus your own research to discuss this topic.
My, my, my fellow lectures all of you never ever cease to amaze me with the depth of your question every week. Ponder and reflect on the subject given...yeah that's it.
Anyways back to the topic at hand - Mcluhan's Tetrad of Media - the diagram above.
What does the medium enhance?
What does the medium make obsolete?
What does the medium retrieve that had been obsolesced earlier?
What does the medium flip into when pushed to extremes?
What does the medium retrieve that had been obsolesced earlier?
What does the medium flip into when pushed to extremes?
My choice of media is youtube.
www.youtube.com it near impossible for anyone NOT to hear of this link. Youtube is a free video upload database. It contains videos of almost ever genre......except for pornographic. Though there are some sensual and sexual themes available.
What does the medium enhance?
Youtube basically enhance the viewers and users around the world to freely speak their views regarding matters. Possibly posting some important events within their lifes or plain fun. Regardless to all that, there are some companies who received free advertising in youtube. It an indeniable that some products are futher advertized throughout the world in youtube. Especially movie trailers and pop star music videos.
What does the medium make obselete?
Youtube actually combined the functions of many other media. Its predecessors focus on a specific task....a radio plays music along with dj's views and opinions. A television shows movies, occasionally advertisement and news. Blogs and forums post opinions on specific issues. Youtube basically combined all of this functions. The existence of youtube encourages the entire world to speak their mind. And due to the fact that the videos covered almost every single aspect...the usage of televisyen had been reduced greatly. News limited to domestic issued is no longer abled to hold the interest of the younger audience whose interest are much broader and international. Youtube supplied the way out. Youtube smartly posted videos of interest related to the viewer in its welcome page...making it easier for the viewer to view current issues. Same goes to music and opinions from people. Educational purposes had also being enhanced. Books in libraries no longer received as much publicity as it used to be. Opinions from certain individuals can be easilly accessed through youtube. blogs and forums also being reduced. In every videos there are comments and rebuttals.
What is retrieved that had been made obsolete earlier?
Just like what most other technology had made obsolete....its human touch. Through youtube it kills the need of families siting together on the couch watching the news; or switching on the radio for some old and old dj's talking. Newspapers arent really needed anymore these days... Proper english reading is now becoming less and less important with the rise of Youtube. It may seem to go unnoticed but i personally realized that the english used in replies, or comments, or even in the video themselves doesn't really abide by proper english. Grammars are mixed up and unofficial internet languages such as LOL and ROFLMAO are becoming common.
What is reversed when pushed to extremes?
To be honest Youtube had already being pushed to an extreme far exceeding most media in the world. But if youtube were to gain much more power then what it already had...things might go bad. For one Youtube does not censor or delete factually wrong ideas and so-called fact based opinion. This might lead to heavy misunderstanding among parties. With the power of the media, many things can be perceived differently, and since youtube is like shoutout to the world, it is possibly one among the many media which is as strong as google. The effects of youtube promotes a much more international mind where aspects of all areas are considered. This is a double-edged sword however because there might be a risk of the certain individual to become twisted against their origin policies. Youtube if used excessively cultural heritage and identity might be wiped out in a long run.

800 words essay?!~?!?!?!? OH NO!!!!!! OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NO TIME!!!!
My opinion??? Hmmm...one word....
NO TIME!!!!
Obscenity, Indecency and Pornography
Pornography YEAHHH WOOHOOO!!!!!
DF ASSESMENT 2 YEAH!!! WOOHOOO!!!!!!!!!
BACK TO MLC YEAH!!!! WOOHOOO!!!!!!
Here goes.....
Obscenity
“…legal concept used to characterize certain (particularly sexual) material as offensive to the public sense of decency.”
- Encyclopedia Britannica
Obscenity in simpler terms means a rough idea of what seemed to be over the limits of sexual exposure that may seem offensive to the public.
Obscenity to me can be more defined as a rough idea; as in a vague line of limit of which is used to categorize a sort of material to be sexually exposing to the local. This limits varied from one location to another in terms of culture, way of life, religion, and even the economical and political standards of the country.
I think that since the world is progressing so widely, culture clashing and materials exposing the line of obscenity is very vague. This is proven that even in an extremely small amount of population area - a small town for example - the standards of obscenity varies.
In the early 14th century of Europe, kissing in public was indecent due to the power of the Catholic Church. But however centuries before even mating and sexual intercourse in public was considered a norm among Romans. In the early 19th and 20th century Malaysian deduced that kissing in public is shameful and blasphemic but in the present age it may not seem so anymore among the younger generations.
In 100 years to come, i predict that there this obsenity vagueness will be much more extreme.
Pornography
“…representation of sexual behavior in books, pictures, statues, motion pictures, and other media that is intended to cause sexual excitement.”
- Encyclopedia Britannica
Pornography, in short media that contains sexual theme thatbrings about sexual excitement.
This term pornography has and will always be a controversial term. Even till today the definition of pornography changes from time to time.
How does one really draw a line between what is pornography and what is not? If sexual exposure refers to pornography, and the limitations of sexual obscenity is the exposure of ...lets say...stomach for example....then does that mean every single hindustani movies are pornographic? If kissing, or sex scenes were pornographic then that will categorized most of hollywood movies as pornographic.
As to date Pornographic can be easily identified among extreme or sadistic or masochist sex scenes. The lower or 'softcore' still stays uncertain as to what category they would be in.
Pornography is banned in most countries but with the power of the internet it may seem that the banning attempts were futile. Debates have often being proposed that Pornography should be made legal, for the side effects of pornography often leads to better morality among the public.
It may seem irrational or illogical but if one would look into statistics; the lowest rape cases in the world turned out to be one of the largest pornographic industry in the world! You guess it right, its Japan.
In my opinion pornography shud be made legal, however a minimum age restriction must be implied and strictified ( if there is such a word ). Make rules more presssing and control the runnings of pornography media efficiently. If we look at it in the long run, we may actually save more lives then futile attempts of hunting rapist.
Indecency
“…language or material that, in context, depicts or describes, in terms patently offensive as measured by contemporary community standards for the broadcast medium, sexual or excretory activities or organs.”
- The Federal Communications Commission
Similar to Obscenity, indecency however is more focused in the cultural favor. Indecent can also refer to other type of 'weirdness' besides sexual-themes. For example, a dirty muddied man walks into a mall with torn shirts are considered indecent.
In the media sense however, indecency usually expose the 'dark side' of a particular society. Stuffs like drugs, illegal racing, political scams and scandals are considered to be a part of indeceny.

Reflections on Media Culture Class
The previous class had been really interesting. Sure the lecture was abit boring. Its not that the lecturer are boring..but the very subject itself. Like i have stressed on earlier...words on powerpoint doesn't really attracts young audience anymore.
The video was the kick-in. I tihnk i understand 90% of the video. This level of understanding beats a roughly 20% max understanding of the powerpoint. After i ask a few of my coursemates and they too had similar experiences. The video was interesting, and the idea of the media stereotypes enters the head with ease.
Enough of that lets ponder on media stereotypes. As far as i can see it, the Stereotypes in movies and animations had gone through a rapid decrease over the years...thank god. Whether it is due to the globalization world where more and more audiences are exposed to one another...or the Japanese Animation 'non stereotype' concept gain more popularity...i do not know. Nevertheless it is clear that the marketing sense of steretypes hold a much critical state at the moment.
But...lets face it ...stereotypes are ....inevitable. It has sunk soo deeply into the very nature of human beings that rejecting it now is not only difficult but almost impossible. Our entire lifes had been socially depending on some media stereotypes...so much that it begin to form the human culture.
Let me provide an example to stress my point. An example of Media Stereotypes involve skinny woman, with a standard average ratio of breast size, hips, waist, etc is considered stunningly beautiful. A muscular man, a clean face with not much of hair, and a deep growling voice is 'hot'.
Would it appear 'natural' if i would say, an extremely fat and grumpy looking lady is beautiful and sexy? How would a fat fully haired faced man appear to the ladies? Can we...who understands Media Literacy, even change this small stereotype?
....it is a losing battle.

Media Literacy
"Media literacy is the process of accessing, analyzing, evaluating and creating messages in a wide variety of media modes, genres and forms. It uses an inquiry-based instructional model that encourages people to ask questions about what they watch, see, and read. Media literacy education provides tools to help people critically analyze messages to detect propaganda, censorship, and bias in news and public affairs programming (and the reasons for such), and to understand how structural features -- such as media ownership, or its funding model[1] -- affect the information presented. Media literacy aims to enable people to be skillful creators and producers of media messages, both to facilitate an understanding as to the strengths and limitations of each medium, as well as to create independent media. Media literacy is an expanded conceptualization of literacy. By transforming the process of media consumption into an active and critical process, people gain greater awareness of the potential for misrepresentation and manipulation (especially through commercials and public relations techniques), and understand the role of mass media and participatory media in constructing views of reality.[2][3]"
Or so and so and so base on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Media_literacy.
Media literacy can be summarized as an understanding of the media, mainly on the 'hidden aspects' of a particular media. Its something which enable people/viewers to ask themselves why and what is behind each media, to ponder and reflect on it instead of being 'zombie followers'.
Media Literacy is without a doubt important for us, especially FCM students. Its pretty obvious with the name FCM referring to Faculty of Creative MultiMEDIA.
Media Literacy allow us to identify the hidden meanings of media, as well as much higher understanding of the field of work we are about to merge ourselves into. "With great power comes great responsibility' and we will be given the opportunity to manipulate this power...power of the media. Media Literacy enable us to understand it better, to comprehend the concepts, abide the ethics, as well as knowing the do's and don'ts.
Understanding the media and its hidden meanings also enable us the power to manipulate the media to our advantage. Advantage here meaning...our goals of gearing the society to a path more preferable. For example, if we would to 'shout' to the public the usage of drugs is bad...hence Media Literacy allow us an understanding of how to 'control minds' of the audience to futher belief our point that drugs is bad. A sufficient understanding of Media Literacy enable us to produce a better work, better design, and a much more comprehendable design for the public.
